WHO WE ARE

The Guyana Unity Movement Inc. is a non-profit organization committed to fostering growth and development within Guyana, and the betterment of Guyanese irrespective of their residence. The vision of the movement is to provide a mechanism through which the Guyanese can voluntarily assist their communities, and peoples through programs and services culturally unique to their needs. Each year, through the Guyana Unity Movement Inc. fund raising activities, we provide financial assistance and/or facilitate the purchase of related supplies to schools, children's shelters along with institutions and organizations here in the U.S and in Guyana.

HOW WE GOT STARTED

In May of 2015, two Guyanese women from the Village of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, Ms. Sherif Barker Fraser and Ms. Doris Rodney had a telephone conversation regarding the newly elected government in Guyana. During that conversation, they decided something must be done to celebrate the newly elected government. After much brainstorming and discussion, both agreed a unity march on Church Avenue would be reflective of the unity demonstrated during the election process in Guyana. Following several telephone calls to the various agencies, the completion of the application process and the mobilizing of a team of Guyanese and friends committed to making their vision a reality, the day had finally arrived for Guyanese in New York and around the world, to unite as One People, One Nation, One Destiny.

On Sunday, June 14th, 2015 approximately fifteen thousand strong in their cultural colors, some waving their golden Arrowhead flag while others joined hands in unity as Guyanese and Friends marched down Church Avenue, from Bedford Avenue to Schenectady Avenue and hundreds stood on the sideline cheering the crown on as they marched in unity.

After the unity march, a group of Guyanese motivated by the show of unity, came together to discuss the activities and its impact on the Guyanese diaspora. At the urging of a few present, a decision was made to form an organization that focuses on uniting Guyanese while simultaneously provide a mechanism through which Guyanese can voluntarily assist their communities and peoples through programs and services culturally unique to their needs. While structuring the organization, the group participated in a number of volunteer activities aligned with their vision and mission.

With much planning and fanfare, the Guyana Unity Movement Inc. a designated 501C (3) tax exempt organization was officially launched on September 4rd, 2016.

What started as a vision to unite Guyanese to march in unity for one day has evolved into a fast-growing non-profit organization committed to fostering growth and development in Guyana, and the betterment of Guyanese irrespective of their residence
